Fragments and Coordinates
Fragments and Coordinates are primarily concerned with landscape as a physical and material surface. My creative process borrows both formally and conceptually from the palimpsest. As a quintessentially religious text, reference to the palimpsest is intended to suggest the often religious motivations behind humanity's reshaping of the landscape. Furthermore, palimpsests carry a visible history and share tactile qualities with both painting and landscape. They are written and then overwritten as a form of spiritual cleansing. When the land is cleared away or urban renewal sets in, a similar process of percieved "cleansing" takes place, I am interested in this process and its often controversial effects.
Paintings from the Fragments and Coordinates series use a variety of media including Oil, Acrylic, wood, paper, collage and Graphite to discuss the use and re-use of urban-industrial landscape.
